Summer Professional Development for Math Teachers

Written by Kwame Sarfo-Mensah | Jun 5, 2024 9:05:32 PM

School’s out and summer is officially here! For many teachers, this is the time to unwind and distance yourself from everything related to teaching. For others, the summer is a golden opportunity to attend a teacher conference, enroll in a summer course, or engage in other professional development. If you are a math teacher in the latter group, you’re in luck because I’ve taken the liberty of compiling a short list of professional development opportunities for you to participate in this summer. Although many of the scheduled dates have already passed, never fear ... There are on-demand options!

Without further ado, here they are:

Middle School Math Summit (PreAlgebra Teachers) - July 29th-31st

I’ve had the honor of being a past presenter and speaker for this virtual summit. If you are a middle school math teacher interested in learning more effective ways to differentiate your math instruction, as well as tech tools that will enhance the learning experience for your math students, this is the event for you! And did I mention that it’s free? After the summit, there is an option to earn a PD certificate, which is worth 15 to 20 hours of professional learning.

Greg Tang’s Virtual Math Academy - June 20th-July 12th

International math consultant Greg Tang is back with the 4th edition of his annual virtual math academy. The academy’s theme for this summer is “Streamlined & Strategic Learning.” From June 20th to July 12th, Greg will provide live morning and afternoon virtual sessions. Each session comes with a registration fee of $125. If you miss any of the sessions, Greg offers a pay-per-view option where you can pay $95 to watch a replay of any session you missed.

Conference for the Advancement of Mathematics Teaching (CAMT) - July 18th & 19th

The theme for this year’s CAMT is “Let’s Talk Math” with an intentional focus on teacher and student conversations in the math classroom. Although the in-person conference just passed, there will be a virtual conference option offered to attendees this summer. The cost for registration is $149 for all K-12 math educators.

Develop Mathematical Reasoning (Math is Figureoutable) - Offered Seasonally

Facilitated by K-12 math specialist Pam Harris, this free online workshop focuses on strategies to help K-12 teachers learn how to develop mathematical reasoning in their students and what it means to engage in this critical work of a mathematician. This workshop consists of 4 modules and you’ll have six weeks of access to work through all the modules. If you’re not able to enroll this summer, no worries! This workshop is offered seasonally on the Math is Figureoutable website. Although this workshop does not offer a PD certificate, you can still obtain a Certificate of Completion to submit as documentation to your school/district.
