After a discussion in their classroom, a group of students at
City Springs Elementary/Middle School in Baltimore, Maryland, were inspired to raise money to support victims of Hurricane Harvey. However, it was the complete honesty of some students that made the experience even more transformational. "When school first started, I didn't really care about what was happening in Houston. That sounds a little selfish, but I just didn't care because I knew I was safe," student Allyah Duncan said. But students, like Allyah, had a change of heart once they learned more about the travesty of Hurricane Harvey in their eighth-grade humanities class. The students launched a school-wide fundraiser and doubled their initial goal of $500 in just a week. "The goal that we had set was $500, and by the end of the week, we raised a $1,000," said a student

That's why I'm a teacher, you know, to have student-led activities, student-led opportunities, and so seeing that was like everything that I wanted to see in a classroom," said eighth grade humanities teacher, Wyatt Oroke. The students hope that their efforts will spark the attention of other schools to do the same. "I think, instead of just our school helping, other schools should help because the moment something happens in Baltimore, we're going to want help, too," Duncan said.
