Miriam Rock

Miriam Rock is an upper school English teacher at Friends Select School. She grew up in Philadelphia, earned a bachelor's in English from Yale, a master's in education from Penn GSE and spent several years teaching at Sandy Spring Friends School in Sandy Spring, Maryland. Miriam is passionate about teaching literature from communities that are traditionally underrepresented in English curricula. She has taught courses on Race, Gender, and Nationality in Literature, African American Literature, World Literature and Interdisciplinary Literature. Miriam spent the summer of 2019 participating in a National Endowment for the Humanities (NEH) fellowship titled, “Discovering Native Histories along the Lewis and Clark Trail.” She was deeply inspired by learning from the members of nine different tribes who she had the opportunity to meet over the course of this fellowship and is extremely aware of how much she has left to learn. Miriam hopes to demonstrate to her students the power of amplifying the voices of others while still acknowledging her own place as a learner.
