Southern white girls weren’t supposed to teach enslaved people to read, especially not the enslaved children owned by their family. But Sarah Grimké, and her sister Angelina did. They're known as "The Grimké Sisters." They weren't supposed to challenge their family’s wealth or question its origins. Using their family name and funds earned from running a school to advocate for immediate abolition was a big no-no. They did it anyway.  Their public embrace of their Black relatives made them an exile in their home state. Their dedication to full suffrage and universal education made them a social pariah in the North. Among white women, their willingness to challenge social norms was truly unparalleled.
